Summit Background

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the ASEAN-KOREA Dialogue Relationship. In celebration of the occasion, the ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit 2009 will take place on June 1~2, 2009, in Jeju Island, Korea. This prestigious Summit Meeting will be joined by President Lee Myung-Bak of the Republic of Korea, and the Heads of States/Governments from the 10 ASEAN member countries.

At the ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit, the Leaders of the 11 countries will discuss the developments of cooperative relations between Korea and the countries in the ASEAN region for the past 20 years, and also examine future directions for progress. Methods to overcome global issues that the international society is currently facing, such as the financial crisis and climate change, will also be discussed.

The ASEAN-KOREA CEO Summit, to be held in conjunction with the Summit, will provide a chance to promote cooperation between businessmen in Korea and the ASEAN region. The ASEAN-KOREA Traditional Music Orchestra performance, composed of diverse traditional instruments from the 11 countries, will build a stronger foundation for closer ties between the countries.

The ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit 2009 will provide a significant opportunity to put the “New Asia Diplomacy Plan” into action, strengthen Korea’s collaborative relations with the Southeast Asian region and expand Korea’s diplomatic relations.
