Cheonjiyeon Waterfalls

Legend has it that angels secretly came down and enjoyed bathing here.
In the lower pond, there are Anguilla marmorata that have been designated and protected as Natural Monument No. 27. In addition, the place where Elaeocarpus sylvestris var. elliptius grows has been designated as the Natural Monument No. 163 and the overall valley where rare plants such as Rubus hongnoensis and whisk fern grow has been protected as Natural Monument No. 379.

Although Cheonjiyeon Waterfalls are not as big as Niagara Falls or the Moon, they have a certain charateristc of secrecy. Amount of water falling is varied with seasons but whenever it is, they have a kind of charm that can lure people. See a clip below.

ASEAN-Republic of Korea Relations

  • Since the establishment of the Dialogue Relationship in 1989, ASEAN and Republic of Korea has been maintaining exchanges and developing relations. Since 1997, the ASEAN-Republic of Korea Summit Meeting has been annually held. In November 2004, celebrating the 15th anniversary of the establishment of their Dialogue Relationship, ASEAN and Republic of Korea adopted the Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Cooperation Partnership, thus building a stronger relationship.
  • ASEAN and Republic of Korea have maintained a very close economic relationship as well. In 2008, the trade scale between ASEAN and Republic of Korea reached US$ 90.2 billion (exports US$ 49.3 billion, imports US$ 40.9); following China and the EU, ASEAN is one of Korea’s top three trade partners. The ASEAN is also Korea’s second top foreign investment target area, and also second top foreign construction market. In August 2006, the ASEAN-Republic of Korea FTA on goods was established, and in November 2007, the FTA on the service area was established, garnering hopes that economic exchanges between the two areas will become more active.
  • Active exchanges of developmental experiences and developmental support projects are also in progress. The scale of developmental support amounts to US$ 283 million (total in 2007, 22.2% of total) in grants, and US$ 1.57 billion (total in 2008, 37.3% of total) in credit assistance. Aside from this, for increased cooperation such as stronger human resource exchanges, advancement of trade and investment, and transfer of technology, an ASEAN-Republic of Korea cooperative fund of US$ 3 million is being operated.
  • The ASEAN-Korea Center, an international organization that was established by the 10 members of ASEAN and Korea, officially started off on March 13 (Fri.), 2009, after its foundation ceremony at the Press Club in Seoul. With the establishment of the center, Korea looks forward to increased trade and investment between the ASEAN member countries and Korea, and more active cultural and tourism exchanges, which will contribute to the progress of cooperative relations between Korea and the ASEAN region.

Jeju: A Paradise For Raw Fish Lovers

If you think Japan is the best place in the world to try some raw fish(hoe), you're WRONG. Because it's Jeju, not Japan. Period. Jeju is an island, so obviously there is lots of raw fish around in Jeju. And nowhere else has fresher raw fish than Jeju. Dubbed as "treasures of the sra", it is also appreciated for the melt-in-your-mouth-like-a-cotton-candy-texture and high nutritious value.

If you haven't tried raw fish, you probably should. You're missing something beautiful in your life. Drinking Soju(Korean traditional alcohol) with raw fish is the best way to get drunk.

You might have tried Sushi. You might have liked it. However the rice part of Sushi ruins the pure taste of raw fish. Eating raw fish as raw fish is a real deal. Give it a chance.

Raw fish in Jeju is so nice that people have a "Raw Fish Birthday Cake." on birthday, like this.

Cuttlefish(Hanchi), a close relative of squid and octopus, is said to be both flavorful and high in protein and calcium. this raw cuttlefish mixed with water(mul) is one of the local favourites. Thinly sliced raw cuttle fish is seasoned with the combination of vinegar, chili source, and soybean paste.

It's only found in Jeju. So if you have a chance to visit Jeju for the summit or other occasions, you should try it. And if you like raw fish(hoe: therefore, it's hanchi-mul-hoe), it's essential. This is Jeju exclusive. Very tasty. A bit spicy though. It's around USD$7.
A stone grandfather or Dolhareubang whose presense was believed to protect the village and to keep evil out has long been a proud trademakr of Jeju. This statue takes on different faces that range from the very imposing to the humorous. Rarely found anywhere else in the world, the bulging eyes, a large stumpy nose, and a wide-thin mouth are the distinctive features of the village guardian. The faintly smiling stone grandfathers were roughly carved out of stone and hold the very image of Jeju Islanders undaunted by their harsh life.

Summit Background

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the ASEAN-KOREA Dialogue Relationship. In celebration of the occasion, the ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit 2009 will take place on June 1~2, 2009, in Jeju Island, Korea. This prestigious Summit Meeting will be joined by President Lee Myung-Bak of the Republic of Korea, and the Heads of States/Governments from the 10 ASEAN member countries.

At the ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit, the Leaders of the 11 countries will discuss the developments of cooperative relations between Korea and the countries in the ASEAN region for the past 20 years, and also examine future directions for progress. Methods to overcome global issues that the international society is currently facing, such as the financial crisis and climate change, will also be discussed.

The ASEAN-KOREA CEO Summit, to be held in conjunction with the Summit, will provide a chance to promote cooperation between businessmen in Korea and the ASEAN region. The ASEAN-KOREA Traditional Music Orchestra performance, composed of diverse traditional instruments from the 11 countries, will build a stronger foundation for closer ties between the countries.

The ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit 2009 will provide a significant opportunity to put the “New Asia Diplomacy Plan” into action, strengthen Korea’s collaborative relations with the Southeast Asian region and expand Korea’s diplomatic relations.
